Because there was a time in America where 21-year-olds had maturity, values and common sense.

Today, thanks to the public education system, television, and "Baby Boomer" parents, that is rarely the case.

Read the Constitution. In the early years of our country when a man turned eighteen he was already experienced in the world. Today people have more leisure time before they really experience life's challenges. In order to change this one would have to petition for a bill in Congress if it is accepted as a bill than it needs to be debated on and get 2/3 of the House and 2/3 of the Senate and the Presidents stamp. then it is sent to the States. If 2/3 of the States agree then the constitution can be changed to not allow 18 to 21 year old to vote.

I am soon to be 19 years old. I do live in the real world and not on some college campus. I am aware of the world and issues surrounding my home. I don't live at home with mommy and daddy and I do have a full time job, so taking away my freedom to vote due to your stereotypes is unfair. I know who I am voting for next year and why I am voting for that person. I know that I am not answering your question, but I am extremely offended by the question itself. I am intelligent enough to understand the world around me and I think it's people like you who shouldn't be able to vote due to you having such a one sided brain. 99% guess that you're a republican.

I think you're on the right track here, but let's expand on it. The truth is about 80% of the voting public is ignorant about what or who they are voting for. Most people just go by what their favorie newscaster says, or perhaps their best friend, Uncle Harry, etc. You get the idea. I think voter registration should include a basic civics test along with it. Is it so much to ask that people be required to understand the process they are participating in? Contrary to the conventional wisdom, it IS NOT always better to vote than to not vote. It's not even just about age. Educate yourselves, people, and you're votes will go much further than they are now.

Because they are the ones volunteering for the army, marines etc. and have a right to vote for the person who will be/wont be sending them to war. And not all 18-21 year olds don't know what they're talking about...the ones who don't care, don't vote. The ones that care about our country do vote. Thats all that matters I think.

I was working when I was out of school. I would have been 17 or 18. So no I was not being being protected by a college campus. What about 30 year olds who've lived with mother their whole life and never done a load of laundry themself!? Should they be able to vote.

I dont even know why I answered this question, you my friend, are the uneducated one.

Some 18-21 year olds act more mature and are more intelligent than people much older. Don't you ever watch cops? Should the people on there have more right to vote?

If thats the case then why do 18-21 year olds have to fight for their country and get tortured, shot at and killed? As far as them living in the real world, where do you think they live? You were given the chance to live, grow older, and grow up, so what makes you think that they don't deserve the same thing?

But its ok yo let them go to war and die for your right to vote? At 18 they are considered adults. At 18 they can enlist or be drafted to serve their country. Why shouldn't they be allowed to vote on issues or people that govern what they do? In case you haven't noticed women can vote too.

Well, Legally, they are adults. With adulthood comes certain rights that children do not have. Unfortunately, many young people just don't care about politics and don't see how voting directly relates to them.

Its a shame, when you consider how important your right to vote is.
