Just saw in CompUSA the HP 1040i 20x (yes, 20x) DVD burner. That's faster than anything currently on the market. :) Everybody else is 18x or slower.

Look in the brands of NEC, LG, and Samsung. These are, in my opinion, the most versatile and reliable DVD Burners. Stay away from the Sony and Pioneers. Even though these are more mainstream, I have had countless problems with them in the computers I've installed them into (which is why I don't use them anymore.)
I'll just add an aside to kh1116: Sony DVD drives ARE Lite-On drives, it's lucky your Sony drive hasn't died. MY sony DVD drive would ONLY burn on Sony CD/DVDs, and eventually, after about a year, it stopped burning period! I've had this NEC for 2 years, and momma mia! I can burn anything, anytime.

they all burn the same quality- although some have faster burn speeds than others and some are more reliable than others. right now i have a sony DVD-RW DRU-810A and it does everything i wanted it to, it can burn cds, dvds and dual layer dvds. before that i had a Lite-On dvd burner and it stopped working after about a year of owning it.... So i recommend not getting lite on
Reply to below:
wow ive never heard that before; i never would have bought a sony drive if i knew it was lite on... hopefully it keeps working, ive only burned a couple dvds before, i use it mostly to watch dvds
