A bonobo is a species of ape... Pan paniscus. They are also known as pygmy chimps.
They are most known for two reasons.
1: They love their sex. But not as a pleasure thing, it is done as a social behavior even between family members. It is a sign of affection, trust, submission, a way to say sorry... you name it. They are also the only apes to have face to face as well as same sex sex and oral sex. Again as a social behavior and not for pleasure. It is also not restricted to bonobos of "X" age and has even been known to take place with infants.
2: The females run the group! Whooo hooo go girls.

Ahem, it depends on your definition of species. I consider Bonobos to be a sub-species of Chimpanzee... but I actually don't know if the common chimpanzee and the bonobo are capable of producing viable offspring.... Anyway, the bonobo is relatively smaller than the common chimp yet more human like in its proportions. They are found in the wild in the Republic of Congo.
You should read Franz De Waal's book "Our Inner Ape" - it's awesome!

Similar species to the Chimpanzee. Behaves very differently than Chimps. More passive...less violent.
Female Bonobo's have more control. They use sexual intercourse for bonding and as a carrot for positive behavior.
Chimps are rules by the males. They are bigger, more muscular, more violent. Chimps' #1 cause of death is murder by other chimps.
Their behaviors are quite strikingly different considering that they were not even known to be different species for many years.

"Again as a social behavior and not for pleasure."
If they didn't get pleasure from it, they wouldn't do it. Of course they do it for pleasure and as a social bonding practice. Bonobos and chimpanzees are the closest relatives to humans. Their ancestors split from the human line after the split from gorillas.
