Most dr's i've talked to have said 4 months
for rice cereal and 6 months for all other
baby gerber foods. before 4 months the
stomach is not strong enough to digest
the food and it can cause bleeding. but
some babies aren't ready at 4 months and
you will know this because when you
continue trying to feed them the rice
cereal they push it out with their tounge
which is an instinct to help them prevent
gagging on something thats not liquid.
Let your baby be the one to decide. Good Luck

Our pediatrician told us that the longer you wait to start solids during the first year the better. That said, he told us that we wanted to just get him used to eating off of a spoon. So we started feeding rice cereal at 6 months.

No solids before 6 months:
http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/delay-solids.html
The following organizations recommend that all babies be exclusively breastfed (no cereal, juice or any other foods) for the first 6 months of life (not the first 4-6 months):
* World Health Organization
* UNICEF
* US Department of Health & Human Services
* American Academy of Pediatrics
* American Academy of Family Physicians
* American Dietetic Association
* Australian National Health and Medical Research Council
* Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
* Health Canada
Most babies will become developmentally and physiologically ready to eat solids by 6-9 months of age. For some babies, delaying solids longer than six months can be a good thing; for example, some doctors may recommend delaying solids for 12 months if there is a family history of allergies.

No, you should wait until he is six months old, unless he is not gaining weight and your doctor advises you to start earlier. This subject keeps coming up, and the answer is still the same: the current recommendations (I didn’t make these up) are to wait until six months before starting solids. Starting foods too early can result in digestive or allergy problems later in life. We have learned that the old guidelines of 4 months are just too soon, and I am willing to bet that in ten years we will be recommending later than 6 months. But for now, the six month guideline seems reasonable. Click here, or here, to read previous FAQ's on starting solids or learn more by reading our Starting Solid Foods article.

Most pediatricians recommend giving your baby rice cereal at around 3 1/2 to 4 months. Just make sure to make it really thin and maybe only once a day to start out.

Most pediatricians recommend starting babies on solids no sooner than 6 months these days; it used to be 4-6, but they're now saying it's better to wait until 6 months.
