The AWD astro is full time AWD. The rear wheels do 60% of the power and the fronts do 40%. This system works well on the astro for safety and handling. My brother owns a 1991 astro that has over 300.400 miles on it now.The astro has a great life span.Hope this helps.

It is IN 4 wheel drive all the time, but it does not power both front and rear evenly. It uses a viscous coupler to put power to the wheels that are losing traction.

what year?...most are full time all wheel drive..or so they say..most of the time you will have one front wheel and one rear wheel driving..some use a viscouis clutch in the transfer case to ease steering and road driving
