what's the deal with stanford's mascot? they're not cardinal birds, but then they have the tree...?

I don't really understand what their mascot is. It's a cardinal i think like the color cardinal, but then why's there a tree? also what's wrong with their band? i heard that they got suspended too...?

They are not the "Cardinals" they are just "Cardinal." But the actual costume is a tree. I really don't know why, but here's a picture of it (scroll down a bit through the other mascots)
