As a northerner who was shot by klansmen in Virginia (yes, they DO exist), I find I have nothing at all good to say about the southern part of the USA except I don't live there anymore.

I do love a woman with a soft, classy Georgia drawl though. Sigh.

The cultural differences, which mostly apply to the eastern United States, are because northern states are more urban and southern states are more rural.

Northern states, being more urban, have historically had more people of different cultural backgrounds living in close proximity to one another. By living close to each other, they have accepted other peoples cultural differences and have taught their children to accept other peoples differences as well.

Southern states, being more rural, have historically not been confronted with people whose culture is unlike their own. When someone from another culture moves to a southern state, they are thought of as different and an outsider. Instead of being accepted for their differences, there is an expectation to conform.

This is a incredibly complex question with countless examples. The only constant I can think of is the more conservative nature of the south. While there are pockets in each that don’t match this generalization for the most part it is true. As a southern boy myself (Texas) I might also throw in that we seem to run on a slower pace down here, not ALWAYS go go go. But that could just be a urban vs. rural thing.

it's not so simple, since Idaho is way up north, but it's not liberal like Vermont, you know.
So let's just focus on the east, since I've lived in Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, New York City, and South Florida.
Oddly I found NYC the friendliest; people are crowded together so they talk to you, besides they know they can get away if you turn out to be screwy. In the south, there's a more gushy politeness, but often it's no so clear who really likes you or are they just being friendly. The northerners were more inclined to be specific about their backgrounds: Are you Italian, Irish, Jewish, Polish, Greek, etc.
In the south it's more black and white, and now Hispanics, who are often all considered "Mexican."
Another difference I saw was the women are tougher in the north. You don't see so many women acting dumb or helpless as in the south, but that's changed a lot in the past few decades as southern girls toughen up, too.
Religion is more often very central in people's lives in the south, but they're definitely no closer to God I can assure you that. There are also more religious kooks that are really scary in the south. They really look down on education in an indirect way.
My apologies to the city of Atlanta, my home town, which is hip and progressive and up there with Chicago in vibe, but once you go out to the 'burbs (which is not far at all) it's another world! Atlanta being in Georgia is kind of like West Berlin in the middle of East Germany.
I heard a black girl say once that she liked Houston because there people were really straight with her. She knew who liked her and who didn't, whereas in the north people act like they're not prejudiced but she saw through it.
I think also northerners are more confrontational than southerners, who'd rather avoid an argument at all costs.
Northerners have a more cutting sense of humor. They throw friendly insults at you to get you riled up, and a southerner might take those insults more seriously.
Northerners usually have a superiority complex, but southerners are fiercely proud and aren't too impressed with "big-talking yankees" anyway. Strangely tho, I found New Yorkers less haughty towards the south than Illinois. I guess when you're #1 (NYC) you don't have to act superior.
The north churns out more art, theater, music, books, film, and college grads, and tends to be a bit more Democrat, but northern Republicans are sometimes more liberal than southern Dems. Southern Republicans are shamelessly fascist, but they would never admit it. They think they represent God, which couldn't be farther from the truth.
I like southern food, especially New Orleans and all the soul-food style vegetables.
I love thinking about regional differences, but there are always exceptions, and big differences in urban/rural areas.

The northers states believe they are superior to the southern states, for some reason. I guess one feels better paying higher state taxes.

However the population growth in the northers states is steady or even declining as more people are moving away from the corruption, taxes, and poor school systems and moving south.

People are voting with their feet.

The north lived a very Urban Life with crowded streets compared to the south. They also lived faster opaced and have more modernized buildings and factories compared to tthe easy living of the south. A large one is obviously the toleraance of slavery and the south's allowing while the north's disdain towards it.
