A long, long time! 20-25 years depending on density of wood.
secondly, the fastest way to get rid of a tree stump, is to dig around the base of it with a mattock, clearing all dirst at least six to eight inches away from the based, and then take a chainsaw(Caution this is sorta dangerous) and go in with the tip of the saw, bearing towards the heart of the stump and toward the roots, once you reach the length of you bar, then make two swipes side to side, making a one fourth cut of the stump, and continue in the same way, all the way around the stump until all four cuts are complete, should'nt take too long, fifteen minutes at the most.
when you finished, the stump should be pretty well below the top of the soil line.
Good luck!

If you can't burn it as mentioned above.....phew, gasoline is dangerous, use kerosene (BBQ fluid).....due to air pollution or burn restrictions try rotting it out.
If the stump is at ground level, chip out a bowl in the middle if possible. Soak it well......very well. Pack it with manure and then cover it up with as much soil as possible. Keep this moist, closer to wet. Throw extra manure and soil on from time to time, but keep it wet. The moisture and the nitrogen from the manure should hasten rotting. I dug a trench around mine and daily filled the trench with water. Still it takes time.......a year or so. Of course all this depends on the type wood and how old the stump is now. Some woods will take years and years.....I hope it's not an oak!

Cut it as low to the ground as possible. Then use one of the commercial chemical preparations that you can get at Home Depot, Lowes etc. They work by rotting it quickly. Also if you live far enough away from others, fire hazards, not in a burn ban location, you can do the following. Cut it as low to ground as poss., saturate with gasoline, let it soak for about 15 min. Place a sheet of newspaper in a metal rake, light , then use it to light the stump. Be sure to stay with it as long as it is burning, have a hose or water source handy. Once it appears to be through burning douse with water for about 10 min.. Soak entire area before leaving. SAFETY IS KEY.

We just had this problem. We went to Home Depot and bought something called "Stump Remover". You drill holes in the top side then again on the sides. Then you pour this stuff into the top holes and it is supposed to rot the stump. Can't tell you how long.

My father had me chop an old crab apple tree into the ground... probably 9-12 inches below surface.
I understand you may also use explosives, too... I'm sure if you asked you'd get plenty of volunteers...
