well u always want to check the sellers feed back and most importantly, read his negitive feedback. if most or all say that shipping was slow then expect a long wait for ur item if u decide to bid. sometimes you'll run into a few that say "seller didn't have item i waited 2 extra weeks then another week for it to get here." in that sort of case you dont want it from that seller because he might put an item up for bid that he does't have. i've made that mistake in biding and wining an item that he didn't have in his possession unless. waited about a month. however if they do have it. then when u win it, u usely pay through paypal and when the seller gets the money he will send the item off. if he is nice he will send it with UPS and provide a tracking number.

If the seller has it in their home; yes they send it to you after you have either won the bid or purchased the item through the "buy now".

When you win the auction, you pay and the item is sent to you. If nobody wins the auction or meets the reserve price, the seller will either keep the item or put it up again to try and sell it.

Yes, they keep the item at home until it sells, and then they ship it to the buyer. Unless they took it to a business that will sell it on eBay for you, and then the business sells it and ships it.
Hope that helps!
