Various things work, if you're thinking of those horrible phone answering trees at most companies these days. One guy even has a website devoted to various ways to get to a person in one way or another.
One that often works is to press 0, or a bunch of numbers, when they ask for a response... but you may have to do it *at least 3 times* before the machine gives up in confusion and puts you through to a person.
Sometimes just never pressing a number at all convinces them that you're calling from a rotary phone, but those are so uncommon now that many places don't even allow for the possibility.

if you make a wierd noise into the mouth piece on the phone a few times, that sometimes confuses the machine and transfers you to a person. try it, maybe it will work. or you could ask your question on here.
