how do you try harder n harder, when it seems like you can't give anymore?

Depends. You could've just hit a plateau. In that case, keep working through it.

Try something different, a different way of doing things. Would reading books help, or talking to people with the same goal?

Thomas Edison failed something like 1,000 times to invent the light bulb -- and in the process developed several other inventions. What I mean is, you may not be getting what you want out of whatever it is, but that doesn't necessarily mean you haven't benefited. Or that your 10,001st try won't get you there.

Then again, sometimes you spend years barking up a tree that seemed a good one at the time, but now, well, it's not.

All this is for you to decide. All the best to you.

Yes! That's me, I've been trying and trying, harder and harder, for last 20 years, each year, each month, each week, each day, each hour and each minute from drowning, I am so exhausted, feels like I am in the middle of the ocean, flapping my arms and legs, trying so hard to keep my head up but someone from down below is pulling my legs, and I am fighting, struggling not to drown.
I am all drained off, don't have no energy and I am sinking.
I use to call myself a survivor, but seems like I am failing and giving up.
Life has not been easy with me.

as far as life goes, I think the reason we fall down is so we can stand again... its almost the what doesn't kill us makes us stronger type thing. When I come across something that makes me want to throw in the towel, and when I feel like I have nothing left to give, I realize that this is life, and its up to me to make the best of it and to use this as a test for myself. I dig in my heals, and do what I can to overcome it.

But I'm stubborn, so it might just be me. I refuse to stay down, role over... and I would rather die trying than die without ever having lifted a finger in the first place.

Forget the past long enough to live in the moment, but remain alert if you catch yourself making the same mistakes. Find the patterns. Work with it.

Go with your impulses, or your instincts, unless they have proven to be completely wrong. Then do the exact opposite. Start with small things. Then work your way up to bigger decisions. But do not endanger yourself.

Never say never.

Don't have any expectations, and you won't be disappointed by the outcome.

Remain cheery. Positive, but neutral.

Learn to laugh off your troubles.

Love your self.

Excellent question! When you keep trying and keep failing, you are following the directions given to you, but they don't work for everyone. You are special. You should find out what works for you by trial and error. How to think, how to act should be based on what works for you. You have unique gifts and can be harnessed with your hard work. Enjoy yourself and the journey.

Look for a different alternative. Sometimes when you're trying hard at something which just won't go, you have to change your method and outlook. Asking different or experienced people might help, since they will have a different point of view from you.

Forget the past and start over even if starting over means doing it again within the next hour. Every experience is a fresh one and have no logical connection to the previous, except within your memory. Try to have a light-hearted attitude and try to think what to do differently this time to create a new result unexperienced before.

Maybe you are going in the wrong direction. Try something else. When it seems that you are banging your head against a brick wall, that is God's way of telling you that you aren't meant to go that way. Pray and you will find your answers.

Keep trying and stop focusing on failing. Even if you have to take it one step at a time; keep stepping!

It's because you keep defining it as failure. It's never failure. It's always a lesson learned. There was an episode of Roseanne when her son asked her if he was a mistake (because his sisters had told him he was) and she said, "you weren't a mistake, you were a surprise." There are all kinds of surprises in life, good and bad, but it's your approach to these things that defines who you are. You choose to see failure. Look in a different direction.
