He would have lived a lot longer, no doubt. First, they would have treated the rabies that killed him. Secondly, he would have had more opportunity to live a healthier life. He could have still been a newspaper editor, however I think he would have no doubt given it up after he sold the movie rights to his first short story. The commercial success probably would have ruined his literature as he began cranking out endless formulaic story after story to feed the media machine, ...just like, oh say, Stephen King. BTW, he probably wouldn't have written any poetry since he would shortly realize the money wasn't in it and his short stories were the cash cow.

He probably wouldn't be a gothic/romantic writer if he was born in today's world.
The people that died around him would not have died in the modern world, therefore his influences would be gone.
The death of his young wife would be irrelevant because he would not have married his cousin in today's world.
He most likely would be a normal citizen of modern society who might have a knack for writing. Maybe he would become a romance novelist?
Come to think of it, I believe it was his foster father who "encouraged" him to write? I don't know. I'm probably thinking of someone else. But in any case, he might not even in today's world be interested in writing.
If he was born twenty years ago, he could be anything from a rock star to a business associate to the hobo down the street. The possibilities are endless.
I have a feeling, though, he'd probably have liked the X-Files no matter how he was born and raised.

good q. I think he may change from the macabre to the real. He wil stil be a cynic and write disturbing poetry, but he might use more of the actual world, natural disasters and occurances in them (VTech shooting, Holocaust,ect.). Since the world is in a horrible state as of now, he may be able to find more inspiration and may write about things that happened. I think if he doesnt do this, he'll write the same style that he has before, but i think it will be more disturbing, more graphic, think something worse than Saw. Lots of gore, and haungting images iof the main character- that almost may give them an immortal feel.

I do not think the people would except his take on life. He would have more in common with the killers in Columbine and the drug scene. He would probably be in jail. His mind was unusual, to talk with him would be a high point in my life as a writer.

He wouldn't be using archaic English anymore, but I don't think he would be topical. He wasn't topical then, so why would he address current issues now? Likely he would be a fantasy writer.

I'm going to guess that a physician would have put him on Paxil and brought him out of his deep darkness and he'd be writing love songs for the Captain and Tenille instead.

I think so.
Art Bell does this every weekend on the late night radio :)
And he's not nearly as talented as Poe.

History would be repeating and repeating , and repeating itself itself, just like the tintanabulation of those G---D--mn bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells.
