ants come in two types, sugar ants and protein ants,
that is, one eats sugars and one eats protein or meats.

first, if you want to kill them, you have to destroy both the worker ants and the queen. That is done with baits. if you only want to keep them out of the house, you need to use integrated pest managament, which is more complex.

but the baits first. DRAX reg tradmark name, is a two type bait that you can put down, you will have to get this from a professional, it is technical grade pestice.

you can also try the various types of baits out there, some jellies, some liquids, some are solids. They can be hazardous to pets.

if you try using pesticides, you better make sure what ants you are dealing with. Some ants such as egyptian ants will divide colonies and increase numbers so instead of dealing with 100, billion ants, you are now dealing with a billion trillion ants.

Mint oils work well as barriers to ants in the house. Also try cleaning you house very clean, using pine o pine or clorox to clean the surfaces.

as a last resort, don't ask jokers on the internet, research this and talk to professionals, like me

Use borate powder. This is a fine, white, odorless naturally-ocurring mineral that is non-toxic to humans and pets. A form of borate is used in Borax laundry detergent. You may be able to find some borate-based products in your local home center or maybe even in the laundry section of your supermarket. Ask around. it is relatively cheap and can be orderd online from any number of sources.

It is used as a pesticide because it is deadly to insects including ants, termites, cockroaches, fleas, spiders, things like that. Because it kills so many wood-boring insects it is often called a wood preservative.

Sprinkle it around where you see the ants. They will track it back to the nest and spread it to the colony. When they lick it off their feet it messes up the enzymes in their tiny little ant-guts and kills them. Because this is not a chemical poison and is safe to use around children, it does not act immediately but may take a week or two, but eventually your ants will be gone.
