The best center fielder ever was Willie Mays. I had the privilege of seeing Mantle, Dimaggio, and Mays play in person and would have to give the edge to Mays. If Mantle would not have had those leg problems for most of his career it might have been a different story but Mays was amazing. The original five tool player, along with Clemente, Mays could do it all in spectacular fashion and he has my vote.

Tris Speaker, though you'll find a lot of support for Cobb, Mantle, DiMaggio, Mays, Jones, Griffey, Puckett, even Snider. There's been some serious riches in CF over the years.

Those two were both great players, but the answer here is Willie Mays. He might be the best player the game has ever seen not just the best in center field. He could do anything you would ask of player from hitting mammoth home runs to making some of the greatest catches you have ever seen. He was a true 5-tool talent.

I believe Ty Cobb played centerfield for the Tigers back in the day. If you are judging by hitting, he is by far the best. For fielding, I would have to say that Willy Mays was the best outfield er, and I believe he played centerfield at some point in his career.

Willie Mays was because he could cover the entire field. Keep in mind he hit 660 home runs at the Polo Grounds where you have to pull the ball so much to hit a homer or you have to completely hammer the ball. He could have hit more if he played somewhere else.

Willie "THE SAY HEY KID" Mays, is the greatest CF of all time 660 career HR's, 300+ SB's, and glove of gold MAYS was truly a five tool player (power, speed, endurence, accuracy, and glove) he was the first player to combine power w/ speed. He was a great leader.

Andruw Jones, the best defensive outfielder ever, yet he can not steal 30 bases. Another lazy major leaguer.
