Well. This will sound like a long process to get you started, but with some practice, you'll ace driving a stick.
If you are new to the whole concept, starting is the hardest part. Push in the clutch pedal. Release it very slowly until you feel the car start to move, or you hear the engine lower its idle a little bit. This is called your friction zone. When you feel the car start to move, give it a little bit of gas, and the faster you roll, the more you can release on the pedal. When you get rolling at a slow pace (i.e...5 mph), you should not be on the clutch pedal at all...You just got rolling...
Shifting gears is the easy part. When your engine reaches the shifting point (some people shift their cars around the 3,000 rpm range, 2,000 rpm for diesel), push the clutch in, change the gear, and gently release the pedal. You will not have you worry about stalling, but jerking around is the fun part here. To ease this, push on the gas to get the engine speed up a little. That will help the jerking.
That is it...
If you already know how to drive a stick, and just want tips, try this.
It is called synchro-shifting. Truckers do this all the time, because the transmissions in their trucks do not have synchronizers, making it harder to shift with the clutch. How to synchroshift...
When it comes time for a gear change, put your hand on the stick, and gently apply pressure towards the next gear. Now let off the gas, and the stick will pop out of the gear. Keep pressure on the stick towards the next gear, and when the engine speed is matching the gears in your transmission, your stick will shift itself into the next gear, and you can press the gas again...all this done with no clutch pedal. To downshift, same concept, except you will need to push the gas pedal down more...just apply pressure to the stick, let off the gas, when the stick pops out of gear, push the gas pedal slowly to raise your rpm's, and when the rpm's are high enough, your transmission will shift itself into the next lower gear without using your clutch.
Keep in mind, that last stunt is a little more advanced...
