The game is age of empires and it asks me for a host ip address. My computer is connected to a wireless gateway router and has a local ip address. my friend has the same setup but at a different location

You will need to know which ports is required by your game to receive connection. You will then need to configure your router (your gateway) to forward the incomming connection from the Internet to this port to your computer (This options is called port forwarding). The you will have to find out what is your public IP address (theres a ton of web site out there that can display that). The give this IP to your friend and it should work.

Most routers have preset configuration settings for various games which will open the correct port for you. If that game isn't listed, then check the manufacturer's website and/or tech support forum and you should find the port number within 10 minutes.
