I'm questioning this, not someone else.

Introspection is required to do some good to others. One needs to introspect to figure out what the hell one did to cause another person to be angry. Introsepction is required to determine one's values (which possibly includes not harming others).

Introspection in and of itself is an activity to discover more about oneself and one's limits and possibilities, without which one would be a selfish pig.

Selfishness is when one does what one wills without consequence to feelings or adverse effects on others. To be introspective at the expense of a healthy social relationship may not necessarily be selfish, but is deleterious to a healthy social life. It is the behavioral aspect that is not prudent, such as spending time by oneself in seclusion or solitary confinement in introspection that may upset others. Not the introspection portion of the behavior. Too much of anything can precipitate social conflict and too much of introspection can precipitate an unhealthy mental state. Thus, it would not be selfish; in this case, it is self-inflicting.

It depends on your goal: If you're being introspective to improve your looks, or to attempt to gain insight into someone's feelings so you can thus benefit, that would be using introspection for a negative result (selfish); If, on the other hand, you're being introspection to gain insight into your faults, or to find out by yourself for yourself why you're having a certain problem, that would be using introspection for a positive purpose. That is also the first sign of wisdom.

Hey Cameron,

Self reflection and self centeredness or self absorption are not the same thing. Only the latter two are selfish.
I do not think being gregarious is necessarily selfish either unless there is a clique mentality going on, otherwise perfectly natural to gravitate to those whom you seem to have most in common with.

I hope you will bless and be blessed today.

Actually the most selfish people I've met spent no time thinking or examining their own thoughts & feelings. Someone who truly knows & loves himself is able to turn that love outward toward others. Someone incapable of knowing & loving even himself will be unable to have any real love for anyone else. They may be bitter angry people, put on a false front, try to fill their lives with material things & addictions to fill the void, never knowing what the real problem is.

Just a thought, based on people that I have met.

Neither is selfish. Anyone who calls you selfish is just annoyed that you are not doing what they want you to do.

Introspection (thinking) is antisocial though. The thinker needs time alone to engage in the activity.

As a species, we each need a varying degree of together or alone time. if you spend alot of time alone, then you are being antisocial.

It's not selfish to understand yourself. Only when you love and understand yourself can you love yourself and love others.

Haters really hate themselves and take it out on others

No. I wouldn'tt say so. Are extroverts egocentric people who need to be the center of attention?

Who is judging you? Why should you care what others think? Questioning society's messages of self-persecution is the first step towards becoming enlightened. Welcome.
