Call the college and ask what they suggest for your major. Mac's are nice for ease of use but may not be compatible with what some of your professors use and software for Mac's tends to be expensive outside of what you get with the base machine.
Windows based PC's can do everything that Mac's can do but may not be as easy to use or learn. They also are not as secure as Mac's not because of the hardware but the software. Windows on a Mac is just a virus prone as windows on a PC. One thing about a Windows machine is that they are cheaper and you can get more free or cheaper software for them. For instance you don't need MS office but can replace that with Open Office which has all the same functions but is free.
To me the ideal machine would be an AMD 64 dual core based PC running Linux dual booted to Windows. But if you are not familiar with Linux or computer literate then just installing it might give you a few problems.

I agree with 1 and 3 to a degree. I would take the computer you are very comfortable with. You will be under allot of pressure right out the gate without having to get to know your computer.
I have PC, Linux, Macs, and even a DOS box. If I were in a "Have to" environment I would snatch up my XP Pro notebook with my docking station. Carry it with you to class and study, and have a full size monitor, keyboard and mouse at my apartment for comfort.
I do it now for between home and work.

Get a Mac running an Intel processor so that you could dual boot with XP. In that way, you can take advantage of the large community of software for XP and also the stability of Mac.

MAC with XP on it. Higher performance, unless you're taking a computer corse, then I'd take a PC.

I have a Dell Latitude D620 (it's a laptop) with XP and it suits my school needs perfectly. This is the laptop my university requires.
I have not had ANY problems with compatibility, speed, etc.
