OK, for my birthday, my friend gave me a beta fish. I'm young, and my friend didn't ask my parents if she could get me the fish. I didn't really want a fish. My cats are probably going to eat the fish, so he has to stay in my room, witch is a big pain. My mom says I should give my friend the fish, and ask her to get me a different present. What should I do?? BTW, we are going on a 2 week trip in acouple of days, and we don't have anyone to wacth the fish.

Your friend was very foolish to put that burden on you without checking first and very immature. And where is her parent? Her mother or father should know to check first with your parent that it was 'OK' before giving any live animal.
You need to give the fish back to your friend and explain that while the thought was nice, you are unable to care for it at this time in your life. UNLESS you think she might harm the fish. If she is careless and unthinking, then you should try to find a new home for your fish. Do NOT flush it!
And do not ask for another present. She already gave you one. Whether it was appropriate or not, you don't give it back, saying "Here. Take this. I don't like it. Give me something else." That's rude. Where is your mother's head?! Doesn't she know better?!
That poor fish. Dumped on a bunch of people who haven't a clue. I hope to heaven he/she is treated kindly.

Hmmm. Well the honest thing to do would be to tell her that, though you appreciate the thoughtful gift, you're afraid that with everything going on in your life right now you would not be a very good fish owner. Then you can ask if she would rather have the fish or would she mind if you exchanged it for some catnip or something. Besides, she may not even think it's a big deal you brought it up.
Good Luck!

Wow, you've really attracted a few callous degenrates to your page.
Tell your friend exactly what you told us. Except add in "I really liked it but..."
1) Mom
2) tHe Cats
3) The Vacation
Ask your friend if she could take it becuse you wouldn't want it to die, G-D wouldn't like it.
If you are so cold-hearted as a few of the people here seem to be remember, someone might be as cold hearted about your cats one day and they could end up being road pizza.
Life is life and important to all creatures.
It is not up to you, or the few turds on this page, to be the ones to determine if it should continue or not.
(unless of course G-D gives you a very clear sign that you should obliterate mankind........ then that's "different")
Oh yeah, and don't ASK your friend to REPLACE the gift, that is so tacky and done only by pretentious lowlives.

you might as well keep it because it would be tacky to give it back and ask for something else. its supposed to be the thought that counts. fish really arent that hard to take care of and to keep the cats off, you could find a mesh clothing item or cloth and cut small holes in it, so that the fish can breath but the cats will retain from sticking their paws in the bowl to catch it. since your going on a trip, you could always ask her to watch it for you while you're gone.

Tell your friend thank you so very much for the thoughtful and beautiful gift, but that you just aren't able to care for it properly right now and would she keep it as a token of your friendship. If she can't take it back, then donate it to a fish store and ask them to give it away to a good home for you.

Tell your friend that you really like the fish, but you can't keep them because with you going on vacation and you also having cats it's hard to take care of them.

Keep the fish. Bettas are so easy to take care of. Ask your friend to watch the fish for you while you are on vacation.

Give it to a local fish store, also that would be really really messed up if you gave it back to your friend and asked for another present, you could give it back and say i just can thave it, thats what i did when a friend of mine thought itd be cool if he gave me a red eared slider ==

Give the fish to someone who ACTUALLY likes it and wants to care for it. Ask your friends before re-gifting it.
However, don't ask your friend to get you a different present. That's rude. If she asks what happened to the truth, tell her that you simply couldn't care for it, or that your mom made you give it away, or something.
