You may be missing a sound driver.
Right-click on My Computer/Devices to see.
If you have a problem here, need to find the driver and install it.

The most common one found on motherboards is AC'97.

(I keep this link safe as it is hard to find).

Install the demo of Everest Ultimate (worth buying)

and it will tell you what your soundcard is and possibly where to get the driver. Or do a search in Yahoo! for it.

This site will tell you also (most likely).

If the icon is missing by the clock and driver is ok (doesn't sound like it is currently) then go into My Control Panel and tick the check that makes the sound icon show up by the clock. Sometimes a sound driver uses its own mixer and I turn on the default for speed as well.

Once you have the problem fixed, turn system restore off and then on again to reset the restore points. Then you cannot restore back to a missing driver.

I'll bet you are running XP because I have the same problem with my computer!

I can't get the icon to return, but if you go to the control panel, then click on "sounds and audio devices, " you will find your speaker master volume control. Move the device volume and speaker volume sliders to where you want them and your sound should return. If that doesn't work, click on the advanced button and see if anything is muted.

I think when you change the volume on some media players (not WMP or iTunes), the program changes the volume level on your entire computer.

Good luck

Go to Start--->Control Panel--->Sounds and Audio Devices. Under that menu there's an option to show the sound icon on the taskbar.

Your sound card might be dead.

Try downloading or re-installing the drivers for it and it should come back.

Go to the "Control Panel" and to "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" and see if anything is listed under the "Audio" tab.
