Why is it that people refer to Greek god's stories as mythology and the "Bible" is eternal truth? It seems like unequal treatment to me.

Pat - Are you saying the only thing separating the bible from mythology is time?

Myth and religion could not exist without each other, they keep each other together. I am a christian, and yet I can completely see that the Old Testament is a collection of myths. A lot are almost identical to some Greek myths, Hindu myths, Persian, etc. etc.

It really is as simple as the fact that the old beliefs died out, or were forced out, over time. Once the faith in the religion is gone the stories still remain, but now they are just stories.

I believe that religious belief is all emotional, not intellectual. As children we believe what we are told by adults. God, no god, bible, etc. Some of it doesn't make real sense as we get older, but we are afraid to not believe. The Greeks were fabulous and creative at making sense of their world with stories. The Bible, in my opinion, does the same. Some of the stories in the Bible were written hundreds of years after the incidents occurred. But religion is power to many, and governments encourage religion as an "opiate of the masses." It keeps people happy to think that a God will take care of them and that keeps away a lot of worries, especially the one about dying. The Christians just are more modern and as long as the Greek stories are just "myths," the Christian stories look more realistic.

That's because Christianity is still being practiced. You'll notice that Judaism, Islam, Hindusim, and Buddism are called religions and not mythologies.

All mythologies were once religions. They became known as myths once people stopped believing in them.
