They have an ambition to make it to the bottom of the pile. Ignoring reality they continue to support losing causes and twist the news so people have to turn them off to get a straight story.

MSNBC had a revolving door in that time slot for years and years. The ratings were terrible. They finally decided to go with a plan and stick to it. Olbermann's ratings have been coming up gradually.
While it doesn't sound like you agree with his politics, there's no denying that Olbermann is one of the sharpest persons in the business. He's one of the best writers around, and his work on ESPN helped revolutionize television sports. He's walking a bit of a high wire with his left-wing tendencies, but I think there should be space on the dial for someone of his talents.

MSNBC signed him to a four year contract. He's in third place, but hasn't been there long enough. (Check out his ratings for the first quarter '07.) All long-running shows have their lulls. He'll need to lag a bit longer before MSNBC thinks he's dead weight and needs to be replaced by someone else.
