the band is known for drama surrounding the lead singer spot. Although the core instrumentalists haven't changed (Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen and until 2006, Michael Anthony on bass), the band has recorded studio albums with three different lead vocalists: David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone. Each vocalist has departed (at least once) under cloudy circumstances

Of course, David Lee Roth was the original lead singer from their earliest days on the L.A. club circuit. With him, they released their debut album in 1978, and became international superstars. Many albums, and many tours later, clashing egos resulted in Roth's departure from the band in 1985. The following year, Van Halen reemerged with new lead singer, Sammy Hagar, who was already a successful singer/musician in his own right. With him, the band enjoyed continued commercial success for a number of years.

In recent years, however, the group's status has seemed a bit unclear. There were bitter breakups, and unlikely reunions. There were cancer scares and divorces and long period of inactivity. I'm not exactly sure when or how Hager happened to leave, or when Gary Cherone took over lead vocals, but if I'm not mistaken, it was another acrimonious departure, just like when Roth left! I don't think the group has had much commercial success in recent years - not that I'm aware of, anyway.

David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, Gary Cherone.

Sylvester Stallone was offered the lead, but turned it down in order to make the first Rocky movie.

David Lee Roth
Sammy Hagar
David Lee Roth again
Gary Cherone....who was the singer for EXtreme. I never actually heard anything he sang, but a friend of mine tells me the album he sung lead on is pretty bad.
I think they are back with David again.
