After 1/8 of a ribbon is thrown away, the remaining part is cut into 2 pices whose lenghts are in the ratio of 4:5. If 9 inches of the original ribbon was thrown away, how many inches long is the shorter of the 2 reamining pieces of ribbon?

Whole ribbon was 72 inches and so was 63 inches after 1/8 thrown away.
So px= 63 and x = 7. So two pieces were 28 and 35.
