yes, i recommend puerto vallarta as well.
this is the "low season" in mexico, so you can get plenty of great deals. go beyond the hotels...look for bungalows and such. as an example...i'm renting a place for 350 USD for the whole week! some places that go for 3,000/wk you can get for 1,000 in the low season.
one thing to know is that many mexicans do their vacations at this time...so that could be really cool for you, or it could result in a more "tame" experience since it's rare to see a mexican girl or guy on top of the bar flashing the crowd. :)
either way, it's not going to be like spring break...but it's still going to be a lot of fun.

I like a lot of the recommendations of "tompink" some very good suggestions. I also agree that Puerto Vallarta is excellent, also Mazatlan is worth checking. Non resort cities worth consideration might be Guadalajara and Guanajuato (HUGE university crowd!)
And yes, Mexico City is well worth a thought but really only if you speak at least "fair" Spanish!
My only real disagreement with our friend is Acapulco! It is nowhere near as "dirty" as it might have been 20 years ago. The water and beaches have been really cleaned up the past few years. The waterfront (tourist/party) area has always been very clean and safe! Acapulco boasts practically every level and type of accommodation at every price: from a good clean two-star room, 4 blocks from the ocean at $15 a night to the "Special Category" all-inclusive for $500 per night!
The city is FULL of every different type of "night spots" imaginable. There are many great "summer vacation spots" in Mexico, but you did ask for a MEXICAN party spot, did you not? If you want MEXICAN, then there is no greater summer vacation spot for Mexicans than ACAPULCO!
This summer there will be more MEXICAN "young adults" in Acapulco (more parties, more night clubs, more TV party specials, more Mexican bands, more hot Mexican girls, more fun) that in ALL the rest of the country combined! If you want to party with tourists, then Cancun, PV, Cabo are all fine! But if you want to party with Mexico, then there is NOWHERE on Earth like Acapulco!

I liked Puerto Vallarta. I don't recommend Acapulco; it's too big, dirty, and too much hustling; every corner some guy trying to sell you something.
Mexico City is amazing!!! If you like cities, it's a great one.
You could also think outside the box and go to Costa Rica!
Beautiful place and very relaxed. Good beaches near Playa Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio. San Jose is fun for a couple of nights. Lots of Canadian, European and Americans visiting too.
Back to mexico.....
If you like laid back you could go to Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa.
Ixtapa is where the big hotels are, and Zihua. is a small fishing village.
You could also fly to Cancun and rent a car and go down to Playa del Carmen and Tulum (Mayan Ruins on the beach) or go to Isla Mujeres and skip Cancun.
Finally, if you want to see a great little Colonial town with an international crowd and lots of art students, try
San Miguel de Allende. It's about 3 or 4 hrs. from Mexico City by bus or reant a car. It's really nice and you are only an hour away from another hidden colonial town, Guanajuato, where you can go see the museum of mummies (museo de momias) and see the world's smallest mummy. These towns aren't near a beach bu there are hot springs with swimming pools just north of San Miguel on the road to Dolores hidalgo.

Acapulco is considered the country’s 16th largest metropolitan area and one of the most important destinations since its golden days in the 1950s and now you can visit it; take a look with hotelbye . In Acapulco you will enjoy the extreme fun, bungee jumping from 50 m high and a free fall of 2 seconds! In Acapulco you can also feel like you own the world because you will be treated like this in the Romano Palace Hotel. Acapulco is a city where you can enjoy: the mornings, the evening and the nights. In Acapulco you will always find something interesting to do.

Las Vegas, without a doubt. Some friends and I went and we had the time of our lives!! Staying there is not as expensive as you would think, and the food is amazing and actually very inexpensive, most places. And you'll never get bored in Vegas.
