If I were British in another life....

Hey, we're older than dirt in here...I even remember the coins called the crown, the half-crown, the florin, the big penny coin [3 of those to make a pay phone call, ding-dong-ding], the tupenny bit, the threepenny bit AND the farthing! All were still circulating and in use when I was a kid. 20 shillings in the pound, 12 pence in the shilling, and 21 shillings in the guinea [which was how prices were marked on upscale clothing and such]. Ten shilling notes were red & cream in colour and were about the size of a US dollar bill...the 1 pound note was larger and green [or blue-green] and white...and the lordly "sorry we can't break that, sir" 5-pound note was considerably larger than the other two bills, was made of flimsier paper, stark white with black engraving. It could be folded into half or quarters and stashed inside a billfold. "Spending a penny" should be familiar to some in here...most public toilets required a penny to use, and provided a polite way of saying you had to drain the lizard.

I am 67 and try as I might I have no recollection of a 'tupenny bit'. The system went from a penny to a brass dodecagonal threepenny bit.
