Destroyer = 2 holes, Submarine = 3 holes, Cruiser = 3 holes, Battleship = 4 holes, Aircraft Carrier = 5 holes

Battleship was a classic paper-and-pencil boardgame long before Milton Bradley decided to package it in the sixties. Any good reference book about boardgames, such as "The Way to Play" by The Diagram Group, should have the rules listed. Please check it out!
