until you press a number, you hold down alt then, while still holding down alt press 1 number, lets say, its number 3. then it should be ♥ If that is what you are talking about, I don't really understand your question.

Alt + F4 will close the current window.

Press Alt, hold it down, and then press F4. It takes 1/2 second.

What are you holding the alt key down for? It's used for several different reasons.
