It is a display of intelligence to talk with those who oppose you. Anyone can display an ego. The best scenario is to match ones brawn with ones brains. If the "enemy" is willing to listen, it would be foolish not to talk with them to see if the issue can be resolved.

Could it be that maybe the sounds of people's voices somehow irritate you? We all have that little tick when something specific sounds annoying. I get what you mean by small talk. Most of the time it is very. For example, sometimes men would try to talk to me and they would ask for my name, that's the first thing they ask and I would look at them weird and go like...why? My name will make no difference to them in the next five minutes or the next day. Could it also be the topics that people talk about? I'm not really sure. Maybe it's just the simple fact that you're 14. Being a teenager is tough and can be some of the most confusion times in a person's life. I thought my teenage years would be fun, but nope. I was SOO glad when I got out of them. I think you just need time to grow.

In the average person's daily life, there's little to gain by talking to those one is at odds with. However, there are times when such cannot be avoided, such as when you're the victim of a traffic accident. Someone has to talk to the other side, or their insurance company. Many people still don't want to do this, but do hire lawyers to do it for them.
Many examples of this exist. You're not going to resolve a property line dispute, or a problem with a landlord unless there is communication. You can talk all you want to among your own family and friends, but until someone talks to the other side, the situation isn't going to get better.

Talking with those we are at odds with is not a sign of weakness unless talk is considered a replacement for action. Pursuing discussions to the last extent in order to avoid war may well bring on war with those who perceive such a position as weakness.
Basically if you never act, talking is a sign of weakness as the opposing side will consider all items as negotiable and, more ominously, that their actions will not be countered but merely complained about.
Rational people can often come to rational conclusions through discussion. It would be interesting to see if anyone believes that all of those states that we are at odds with are acting rationally. Certainly Saddam did not act rationally unless you think that bluffing that he DID have WMDs was somehow rational...
Talking is not a replacement for action; discussion and action go hand in hand, and, unfortunately must do so. It would be a great world if talk always avoided the need to act. To think that we live in such a world is dangerous folly.

We should always give diplomacy, negotiations and any other peaceful means to a foreign relations matter first. When tried talking to Saddam Hussein for eleven years before we finally concluded that he would not willingly comply with UN Resolutions and initiated military action to change the regime in Iraq.

Actually I think talking is a mistake. Iran is flooding the region with weapons and terrorists so we should simply do the same - arm someone that wants to take the government of Iran out and let them have a war. North Korea is harder because the nation is brainwashed. So send him (president of NK) telling him that if he ever hurts us or an ally in any way his country doesn't exist any more.

If we don't talk then there will be more rumors and mistrust which can eventually lead to a war. Not good.

we should hold talks with whomever is willing to talk and exhaust all diplomatic options that dont jeopardize our values and national dignity, in order to avoid war.
