I am trying to cut a plywood frame for my airconditioner. I need to cut a square out of the center. How do I do that? What tool do I need?

Draw the size square you need to cut out on your plywood with a pencil. Use a drill with the biggest bit you have and make a hole on the inside of the line near one corner of the area you've drawn on your plywood. Using a jigsaw, place the blade in the hole and follow the line you have drawn.
Safety first - use eye protection.

You will need a drill with about a 1/4 to 3/8" drill bit and a jig saw. Outline the Square for the opening an then drill holes in each of the corners (make sure that you drill inside the square). Then use the jig saw and slowly cut along you line. you will need to watch what is under your work piece because you may cut thru it. Use some 2x4 scrap under your plywood to lift it up off of any table your working on and give the jigsaw blade room to move up and down.
The other tool to use would be a spiral cut saw. With the right bit you can drill into your material and then move along your lines. Theese saws can be a little difficult to control.

The router will turn it to sawdust but you can buy moldings at most D.I.Y. shops. Use a router with a cutting bit, you say you will be using an old 2 inch door, so cut a slot in each side to within an inch or so of the front of the shelf, screw the molding to the walls and slide the shelf over the moldings. job done. You could also use a different cutter to provide a decorative or rounded edge to the front of the shelves, just take any cutting steady make a lot of shallow passes instead of one deep cut, and wear ALL recommended safety gear, routers don't know the difference between wood and flesh

I suggest you take one to a hardware store and they can do it for you, if you don't want to do that then you can get an electrical saw
