Neither. Responsibility is TAKEN.

Think about it. What does a responsible person do? They are a steward. They manage. If there are problems, they fix them. If things are going well, they leave them alone. It doesn't mean you are in complete control... just that you are doing your best.

So what's stopping you from having any responsibility you want? Be responsible for world peace. You may not be able to make it happen by yourself, but by OWNING it, it BECOMES yours.

In my working experience, first of all responsibilities are given. Every person who works have to be given the core responsibilities because that is worth your salary. So it is stupid of the management if you are not given those responsibilities and you are just sitting around earning the salary freely. Never assume that a person cannot carry out the responsibility. Unless a person is proven to be good for nothing, then you have to delegate those responsibilities. If you carry out those responsibilities, you will be given other responsibilities. Some responsibilities demand that you have to be almost perfect. Some responsibilities are very flexible and as long as you carry them out in whatever way, people could not be bothered. There are responsibilities that are forced upon you like when you discover your girlfriend is pregnant out of wedlock and so it is neither given because neither of you plan it and it is not earned because again you are not married. In a very competitive working world, some people use this as a means to suppress others and to exalt the people they wish to exalt. So people who are well qualified are made to look like stupid fools.

Ultimately we are responsible for the choices we make. Responsibility is neither earned nor given. It is the way it is. Unless one is psycotic responsibility lies with the one making the choice.
For example a 14 year old who takes the family care without permission and gets into an accident is not held unaccountable because he wasn't given permission or he didn't earn the right. He is still held responsible. The choice of a parent to raise children entails many far-reaching responsibilities. Are those given or earned?

Neither. Responsibility is the willingness to accept that you have a say in the manner in which your own life unfolds.

As a by product of being responsible for ones own life, a person creates love and affinity and respect with others. That love and affinity and respect may appear to someone watching as though an outside force is laying responsibility on the first person, which is not the case. The first person is responsible, which makes all else possible.

Responsibility is the flip side of freedom. It is neither given nor earned, it is the natural order and just is. The question then becomes does a person acknowledge and accept their responsibitlity or blame others for the conditions in their life?

Its tough to answer I've thought the same question alot of times.I've concluded that respect is given because of the good choices you make and what you have done in the world. Then again that respect was also earn for those same reasons so I think its both.

we are born with it. Responsibility is part of our humanity.
consequences are earned by our decisions they may lead to responsibilities or obligations but we are responsible from birth to make sure we are getting what we need to survive and grow and fulfil our growing responsibilities. .

Hard to believe that crying is a job! but it is one of our first.

responsability is earned...every time you make a decision you earn a responsability

Both, but its given on a trail bases or if a more qualified person is available, he will still face the trail period to see if he could handle the responsibilities. There is a qualified man that sits on his hand and and unqualify bum in the kitchen serving the food, who would you hire.
