Say a big tidal wave just swamped 100% of the north continent. Or it was resting on a gigantic block of ice and suddenly it all just fell into the sea. Or a comet whiped everyone out. OK, no more america. So now who takes over?

Probably Canada as it borders the US, and the only country in the American continent worthy of taken over. Uhh, the Mexicans would have very far to go. Long way from the Mexican to the Canadian border. Who else would the rest of the world have to blame for their inadequacies/problems.

If the US disappeared, I would want to disappear with it. I don't see myself anywhere else but the US.

I suspect it would be China, since it is a super power within it's own right. Then China could deal with illegal aliens invading....LOL! With China's massive Army, I suspect that illegal immigration would become a thing of the past, and if they DID take over what remained of the USA.....Mexico and Canada would most likely become a thing of the past as well, since Canada, and Mexico are part of the north continent.

Russia versus China versus Western Europe

Your question seems to assume that we are in charge now. Are we? Isn't one of the problems we're having that the rest of the world is doing fine all by itself? Isn't the Euro, isn't the Yen, stronger than the dollar?

Since we're obviously not in charge now, why assume anyone would step up to 'be in charge' if we disappeared?

I think the world is pretty much comprised of nations and businesses that run on their own, without being directed by any super power.

Maybe the end of the age of superpowers is a good thing; the first step on the road to a united planet.

I think it likely that China would take the lead as a global power, if we fell in to the ocean or not, they've already taken over our economy, thanks to our politicians making it easier for American companies to dump American workers, and have thier products made overseas, and selling them to us. Now that China has embraced capitalism, they have very much taken over the manufacturing sector globally. We make nothing anymore, and consume every thing, how long can that last ? As near as I can tell, it has been a long time since we were the global leaders we used to be, yet as a country we persist in thinking that we still are....

I assume you mean as what is now called a global superpower. My guess would be a fight between China and Russia. I personally would rather see an end to superpowers, but consider that unlikely.

Russia, EU and China would have the most global clout. Japan would have to greatly expand its military spending. I don't think much would change except others, like the EU and Japan would greatly expand military spending.

After a few years of squabbling between many, China would emerge as the world`s foremost superpower...In the end, it would be China.

China takes it all by simply loading people on barges and sending them around the globe. Nobody will sink them.
