There could be a number of possible causes. A doctor might be able to offer some insight, but I would certainly recommend talking to a counselor if you've gone through tough times emotionally. It may take several tries to find someone you feel comfortable enough to trust to really dig down with, but it can be incredibly helpful at finding and throwing out a lot of that old pain that still hurts you now. In the meantime, just work with your boyfriend to hang in there with the kicking - if it's emotionally-influenced, it should ease up over time as you work on clearing out the junk in your emotional attic and replacing it with affection and support.

It may be "restless leg syndrome". If it is very uncomfortable to you, feels like you have to move move move, gives you a feeling like pressure moving up & down the legs, like bugs moving about - then it may be RLS.
There are medications out there. Check with a doctor and see if it is RLS triggered by mental stress or by true medical conditions that would have been in place, anyway. They say that RLS is severe if you experience it 3 or more times per week. If you have it, you will be awakened from sleep by it. It is an incredibly uncomfortable and even painful experience.
