They are all the same animal.
Scientific name Puma concolor
common names Cougar, Panther, Puma Mountain Lion.

There are several subspecies like the Florida Panther, North american and south American subspecies. But they are all varieties of Puma concolor which can go by several of the different common names; Cougar, Panther, Puma Mountain Lion.

A puma is a North American big cat also called the mountain lion and cougar and, mistakenly, a panther.

A panther is a leopard. It is native to Africa and Asia and comes in two colour phases. Yellow panthers are about ten times as common as the black or melanistic phase. Yellow cats can produce black young and black panthers can produce yellow young. All panthers are spotted, you just don't see the spots on the dark phase cats unless you look very closely. The name "panther" came into Middle English from the Latin "panthera".

Puma always means mountain lion. Panther often means other cats as well. It often is associated with black coloring as in black panther.
