Of course I wouldn't call them an idiot. Does the word 'understanding' mean anything to you? It's a huge aspect of any relationship, and calling your spouse an idiot for an honest mistake would be just the opposite.

No. If the spouse went to the store and got the wrong thing then both spouses have issues in their relationship. A man or woman that is truly into the one they love will call if they have to and make sure they have the right thing before they get it. But the relationship will tell you why that spouse did not bring home the right thing. It is not totally their fault and no one deserves to be called names. That will only make things worse than what they already are.

Only people with no manners would call others names.

The case here involves one spouse doing a "favor" for the other spouse. Whether it is bad instruction or wrong assumption (that the person going to the store knows what she is doing), it is nevertheless a favor and has to be resolved civilly.

If it is about an employment relationship where the assumption is that the employee has knowledge of the assignment but unable to deliver, then there is call for reprimand.

no, at least they tried. they migh be willing to get the right thing next time. maybe the description given was not the best? you should never call anyone an idiot when they tried to do something nice for you. everyone makes mistakes and this kind of mistake is not life-threatening, so no big deal. i would say argh! oh well and try to give a better description of the item, my husband would do the same.

Let me guess, hubby called you an idiot....been there done that, and only because he THOUGHT he could...I set him straight. My best advice and the only thing that really seems to hit home is to treat him the same way. It may take a while, you'll have to be patient, but wait till he's doing you a favor, he thinks he's really being nice and SLAM HIS BUTT....then you say calmly, that's exactly how I felt when...."yadda yadda yadda" Give him some time to think about it, and then say to him, "I love you, I just wanted you to see how I felt at that moment." Sometimes we take things out on the people we love the most in the world because we are comfy with them...it's unfair and not right, but it's what we do.....remember

Hey, everyone makes mistakes. Just be grateful you have a spouse that is willing to make runs to the store for you. If you call them an idiot when they are trying to help you, don't be surprised if they become bitter and don't want to do anything for you anymore.

Not if I loved them. An apology would definitely be in order. If this happens a lot, or this type of attitude is shown often, then there is something more going on than the person's just having bought the wrong thing.

No I would never call my husband an idiot for buying the wrong thing. Look, alot of husbands won't shop for their wives at all and the ones who do - are simply miraculous if they pick up the right thing. You need to give him credit for the effort and for loving you enough to put up with criticism when he tried his best.

An idiot... no... but he was probably just spouting off. I can say I get frustrated when I am specific about something I need, and it's not right. Don't people say do it yourself if you want it done right?
I would offer to go back and exchange or tell him to get his own stuff next time. Depends on how ugly he was.

Let's seeeeee. I would call the name-calling spouse an ungrateful jerk. The spouse who went to the store was doing other spouse a favor and the jerk spouse should be thankful and grateful and realize that other spouse is not a mind reader, nor is she perfect and if jerk spouse wants perfection- he should go to the damn store himself!
