I am looking into an apartment in northern New Jersey that happens to be offered up by a broker (with a nasty broker's fee). I made an attempt to contact the renter directly to work out some things with him outside of the broker's influence, and the broker took exception to that. I was unsuccessful in getting the renter's contact info. Now, I tried to contact the broker and asked them for the renter's contact info, and they refused to offer it even though I already filled out a renter's application.

What are my rights as a potential renter in speaking to the person offering the apartment directly?

None. The home owner probably hired the property management company or listed with the broker because they didn't want to deal with renters. They have employed the broker to offer the property to you. So, you are actually speaking to the person offering the property.

The broker was perfectly correct in taking exception. He is the authorized agent of the owner of the property, and you had no business dealing with anyone other than the broker.

My guess is that you aren't getting anywhere because this broker already knows that you are trouble. You haven't even signed a lease yet, and already you're trying to go around him.

I'd send you packing as well, and find a more reasonable tenant.

None. The landlord has hired the broker becasue the landlord doesn't want to be bothered with direct contacts. It is a common practice.

From what I can gather, you have no rights. You don't have any kind of deal with them, nothing signed.
You went out behind the brokers back, this wasn't to good. NOW, if he doesn't want to deal with you, he doesn't have to.

unfortunate until you pay the fee to the broker he doesn't have to tell you anything.that's how they make their money. by charging you for the info, and the landlord for advertising and going though the application.
