Really impossible to say, but it could have been the result of some type of physical trauma.

Blood in his eye is not necessarily a sign of death (though it is a sign that there is something wrong). To see if he is dead, watch for gill movement for 60 sec. If there is none the fish is indeed dead. If there is, he isn't dead but is definitely in need of some emergency care by a vet or may need to be euthanized. DO NOT FLUSH!

he proably looked into something really bright and his eyes started bleeding
