We see that fast bowlers take a long start like thirty plus steps for each ball they deliver. To me it looks like a lot of waste of their energy. Why do they do that?

Mainly because it helps build up speed. I can tell you from experience that if you can do it well, fast bowling (including the run-up) is the most enjoyable part of cricket.

the more pin action you get the more pins fall, the more pins fall the better chance you have at getting a strike. Pin action comes from three things: angle the ball hits the pins, the spin on the ball, and speed of ball. When a bowler has mastered the perfect angle and spin of the ball he can add as much speed as he can get while maintaining that same angle and spin. Some bowlers feel that by taking a short jog towards the lane can give them that extra momentum and speed to get the most pin action. And if you get worn out and tired from 10 frames of bowling then you really shouldn't be doing much activity.

*EDIT* Oops, are we talking cricket or bowling? lol, just got here from main page, never looked.

All wrong!!!!

If they were just concerned about speed they would take a shorter run up. Any good fast bowler will tell you its about rythm. You can run in as fast as you can but as long as there is no rythm you dont know where the ball is going. Next time you see a fast bowler watch them closely and you will see the rythm.

The faster you bowl the more rythm you need in order to keep accuracy

They need to build up momentum so they can bowl with speed. It's had to bowl with that much speed if you take 2 steps. It's not like Cricket is a constantly moving sport like Basketball. It's not really that tiring.
