I used to get nervous when I first started. Assuming u know ur material well, don't look at ur audience. focus just above their heads. I have been known to close my eyes and play, or watch my left hand. Just go out there and give it ur best shot. Enjoy what u play. hope this helps.

my band mates know I get nervous to this day...been playing since i was 16....so they take the front, and I play off of them, doing what I should, all my parts, but watching and smiling with them like we are at a practice and having fun....when I get comfortable after the middle of the first set or even into the second set, I will move up and share the row, and have fun with people in the crowd, but always aware of my bandmates, and where my left hand is, hitting those chords....

just follow these principles for being successful

1. be yourself, then be the best you can be
2. overcome what others say and think about you
3. face your fears
4. choose your friends wisely
5. draw inspiration from others

a couple of them may not apply to performing but they do apply to life
good luck

Deep breathing is good. Also, try to find something to stare at, (not the lights!). The more you do this, the better it should get.
