Yes, contractions are a sign of labor. Call the doc or the hospital when they are five minutes apart or when the pain is bad enough that you cannot talk through it. Good luck and God bless:)

In my childbirth class, we were told to go to the hospital once the contractions became 5 minutes apart. We also learned that the way to tell if you are really in labor is if they get longer, stronger, more intense, and increase in frequency. Also, if you change positions or activity and the contractions stop or go away for awhile, then they are probably just Braxton-Hicks (false labor). Real contractions will not change or be afftected by your change of activity or movement.

Good luck and congratulations!

Is this your first? Do the women in your family have quick deliveries? You usually don't go to the emergency room until the contractions are even and 5 min. apart. Are you far from the hospital? These are all factors on whether or not to wait any longer and keep reading on Yahoo or grab your partner and head out. Good luck.

Sex can cause contractions, but until they are about 4 minutes apart, I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably Braxton Hicks (I know you don't want to hear that, I didn't when I was pregnant either!) Depending on how far away the hospital is, about 4 minutes apart is usually a good time to call your doctor, before going to the hospital.

In Canada, with a first baby, they say go to the hospital when contractions are 5 minutes apart and last for 45 to 60 sec. I would call your doctor and let them know though - they will be in the best position to inform you.

On a side note, we were told that contractions with back pain is a side that the baby is facing "sunny side up" or face up and that you should lean on your hands and knees to try and turn the baby over - makes it easier for delivery.

good luck and congratulations.

Sounds like labor. Call doc or midwife and ask when they want you to go in. Some say when contractions are 5 minutes apart, some say otherwise.

YOU need to get to the hospital and fast!!!
Since you are having contractions not very far apart.
I would not bother sitting here waiting on too many more answers to your question.
GO GO GO!
Good luck and hope everything comes out okay.

It could be... If the contractions get stronger and closer together, than you are in active labor. Otherwise, keep waiting. When you are in active labor, you will know.
