I hate being called british (I'm ENGLISH) and my future sister-in-law, who knew this, kept calling me it so I called her a yank, I didn't quite understand her reaction to it, but over here, most people I know aren't complimenting the americans when they're callin them yanks

Personally I don't care. I'm from the south though so I guess I would be considered a redneck, hillbilly, goat humpin', family screwin' country bumpkin'....

Well...not all Americans are 'yanks' by American standards...I'm from the south so I am not a 'yank'..... a nasty name for the Southerners are things like 'hick' and 'hillbilly'....I don't know why...I'm just plain ole' Cajun...but I guess most people don't know that 'yank' is a word that the English generally call Americans....so maybe your sister-in-law is not a 'yank' by Americans standards so to her it is a big insult, because most Southerners use the 'yank' as an insult to people in the north....I hope that helps!!!

Yank could be more offensive than Yankee. It is also about who is saying and the relationship with the person who calls you this. Should certainly be avoided amongst professional circles and acquaintances. Better safe than sorry. You do not want to use a word as an endearment because you value a relationship and end up becoming a hate-buddy instead.

no, because everyone is not a yank, that came from the war between the south and the north, where the northerners were called yankees and the southerners were called confederates, I personally am from the south and not a confederate, that was something from the preslavery days and we no longer go by those names

I would prefer "American", I really don't care for the term Yank however I don't think it's a derogatory term. There is a song by George M. Cohan entitled Yankee doodle Dandy.

I have never been called a "yank"; however if the term is meant to be an insult.. then yes I would take offense if someone called me one. But if truly act like one... then what's the harm?

I'm not a yank. I'm a Texan.
Joking aside, it doesn't bother me.
