~You don't have to go to work whether or not there is a strike on. However, if you chose not to go and you get fired, don't expect the union to go to bat for you. Think about that when you enjoy the gains you make at the hands of the union when the strike is over and maybe show some appreciation by contributing to the strike fund. By the same token, if the union is destroying the economy much like the UAW has killed the US auto industry (to mention but one), have no qualms about crossing the picket line.

It sounds like you are from England. Why have you not joined the union? Usually unions cause increased benefits for the company's workers and have promoted job security. Of course, members must also pay union dues, but in America those dues go into a fund to help the workers' families while a strike is on.
People who work during a strike are called "scabs" in America, and are very unpopular in their workplace. When the strike is over, often so are the jobs of the "scabs"!
If you are not a member of the union and do not go to work, you will be fired. If you go to work during a strike, you will be shunned after the strike and possibly assaulted trying to cross picket lines.
My advice? Join the union and stay home, or get another job immediately.

If its anything like the US, no, you don't have to go to work, but realize that as a non-union employee, you won't fall under their negotiated resolution of the labor dispute to allow you to return to your job. You are essentially what we call a work at will laborer. If you don't want to go in, that's your choice...if they terminate you because of it, that's their choice and the Union that you didn't join isn't going to be overly concerned about you after the strike.
