Okay, I have four new platies and on of them is acting a little strange. Its zooming around the tank and when its not is moving rapidly from side to side. Its eating fine and not bothering the other fish (doesn't seem to be aggressive). It is a little larger than the others so I suspect it is older. The best way to describe it is hyperactive as. It has no spots or other signs of disease and its poo it fine. I suppose if it was human you might think it was having a fit!

The tank is 50 liters and there is plenty of plants and places for them to hide. Ammonia level is 0.25 (slight elevation due to new fish).

PLEASE has anyone see this before? All help is appreciated.

So I've done the water change and ammonia now at 0 (thank goodness). No other fish are affected and there is no sign of ick, I am thinking that the shimmys might be the answer but wouldn't that effect all the fish? Also the affected fish is slightly larger than the others. So if I go down the route of shimmys - could you advise me what to add, I've searched for shimmy blocks but can't find them - does it have another name?

THANKS

If zooming around the tank (not just swimming fast in place) your fish is probably just adjusting to the new accomodations (I imagine they are rather large compared to those of the fish store since he has less neighbors LOL). However, if the fish seems to be trying to swim very energetically but isnt getting much of anywhere this is called "shimmying" and can be a sign of illness.

The only time you really have to worry with these fish are when they close up there fins against there body, at which point you know theres something wrong, the possibility is that he was rather attracted to a particular female in the previous tank and is still actively looking for her.
Your ammonia is rather high and has as been suggested a partial water change should help, otherwise i'd not worry unless you see obvious signs of illness.

sometime ick can cause fish to zoom around the tank the generally stratch themselves on their side at the bottom of the tank on the gravel, they can tend to twitch. if this is the case put some salt & ickaway in the tank if not nick name the fish speedy, my fish alway eat and are normal with a mild dose of ick

The ammonia is probably doing it. I'd do a 25% water change and condition with something like StressZyme.

My catfish does that all the time! He's fine! He's just a super active fish..nothing to worry about. God Bless.
