It's a compound word:
"Li" meaning extremely hot Chinese ice skater from the 1990's
"Bertarian" - a follower of the philosophy of Bert, of Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street
So it's a smoking hot Chinese ice skater who likes pigeons.

Unfortunately, the Anacho-Capitalist Radical wing of the Libertarian Party has controlled the party for a long time.
The Libertarian Reform Caucus is trying to modify the party's platform so that its candidates will be better able to get the support of regular voters who haven't read Ayn Rand's 'Atlas Shrugged' or 'The Fountainhead' lately.
IMO the Libertarian Reform Caucus is looking for converts, while the Anarcho Capitalist wing of the LP is looking for heretics. The 'other' wing of the party tries its best to shoulder Reformers out of the party.

Libertarians believe that the rich should be able to enslave the working class and poor in the name on "free markets".
Libertarian’s religion is unregulated capitalism, which history has proven always leads to extreme wealth and extreme poverty, master or slave.
Libertarians hate unions and they wholeheartedly support the rights of corporations to enslave their workers. What are the freedoms and individual rights of a slave ? Take away a person's right to a decent wage, to health care, then tell him or her they are "free". Free to do what...starve ?...to work 3 full time jobs ?
While libertarians pretend to be pro individual they must know that a single individual is powerless in the face of the free markets the libertarians love. The libertarian thinks that the freedom of the market is more important than the people who lose their freedom (by being denied a decent wage, health care, a livable planet) because of the actions of the market.
Libertarians have no sense of community. They want a worldwide marketplace where a few rich people live like kings while the rest of us function as their slaves. They hide this disgusting philosophy behind the facade of individualism, and love of free markets.
In a libertarian world corporations could destroy our environment in the name of libertarian freedom. In the libertarian world the people wouldn't be burdened with horrible things like taxes...because it's all about the individual....nor would they be burdened with things like roads, police departments, fire departments, an army, a navy, an airforce, a national guard, schools, non-poisoned foods, non-poisoned water, non-poisoned air (the government agencies that protect our food, air and water wouldn't exist...it would all be voluntary, by the individual)......the things the dreaded taxes pay for
Libertarians are nothing like liberals
Liberals have a deep sense of community and concern for all human rights......."We the People"
Libertarians are concerned with the free market place and have no sense that we are in this together....everybody killing everybody in a non-stop battle of economic Darwinism camouflaged by the extreme misuse of words like "freedom" and "individualism"

A Libertarian is someone who believes that personal freedoms and liberties should be most important. These freedoms should only be minimally infringed on to achieve a stable society.
I would say that it is closer to the traditional conservative point of view, small government is better, than to the liberal point of view.

A libertarian wants to minimize government influence. That means eliminating social programs, regulation in industries, and even legalizing things like drugs and prostitution.

Libertarian, definitely, does NOT mean liberal.
The libertarian party is a third-party that is fiscally conservative and socially liberal.
The main tenet of Libertarianism is that you should be allowed to do what you want to do, as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others.

lib·er·tar·i·an (lĭb'ər-târ'ē-ən)
n.
One who advocates maximizing individual rights and minimizing the role of the state.
One who believes in free will.
While liberals may or may not advocate maximizing individual right, they tend to see the government as a more useful then libertarians.

Here is a general site. Less political then some.
Most of the sites run for election purposes are more partisan, just like the other parties.
