If you went to Control Panel and the volume is grayed out - most likely the sound drivers are not installed.
How to check - Right click on MY Computer - Properties - Hardware tab - Device Manager. See if there are yellow marks (?) next to your sound device - if they are present - drivers need to be installed.
How to install the sound drivers - Easiest - look for the driver CD that came with the computer. In Device Manager - right click on the audio device - click reinstall driver- have your driver CD in the drive. Click no to going out to the Internet - click install automatically - point the install to the CD drive - normally 'D'.
Don't have the drivers? You will need to know the manufacturer of the sound chip. Go to the manufacturer's web site to download the drivers.

Be sure that you have them plugged up to your computer, there should be a little engraved or raised picture on the back of your computer, that has little speakers on it plug them in (hole may also be in front), and then make sure you have the master volume up on your computer desktop, and as you said look in the control panel too, also make sure it is not muted.
Best Of Luck!

Make sure the speakers are.
Plugged to power
Plugged into the correct sound port in the mainboard.
If you have a sound control (little speaker icon) icon in the system tray (bottom right hand corner of screen). Double click, make sure the volume is up and not muted.

You have to put in drivers bfore anything will work. If you have a cd for your mobo w/integrated sound on it, use that for the drivers.....otherwise go to the manufacturers site to find the drivers and download them
