I would say aluminium but only since the house i live in has had an aluminium ladder since the house was built in 1984 it's a compact size and more than comfortably fits in the loft hatch i've not come accross wodden types before

Grey:
You say your tired of climbing a step ladder to the loft, then you ask which ladder should you use...wood or metal??? If you don't want a ladder then install a lift to the loft floor.
Or get a hydraulic lift to get you up to the loft.

Aluminium ones are generally lighter, so easier to put up & down but the timber ones feel sturdier. I expect the space available and whether it's a folding one or extender would be the deciding factor.

timber will be more durable and more beautiful. aluminum will be cheaper and lighter. I'd personally go for the timber but you can make your own choice
