Mexican President Cardenas offered him sanctuary. The Mexican state paid for a house and high security. He and his wife lived in a bunker inside a house behind hish walls with barbed wire and two watch towers. Stalin's men penetrated this small fortress in 1940. Trotsky's assassin used an ice pick, attacking him from the back while he was writing on his desk. The house is today an impressive Museum, where Trotsky's library is preserved, as well as the desk where he was killed.

After leading the failed struggle of the Left Opposition against the policies and rise of Joseph Stalin in the 1920s and the increasing bureaucratization of the Soviet Union, Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party and deported from the Soviet Union in the Great Purge. As the head of the Fourth International, he continued in exile to oppose the Stalinist bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, and was eventually assassinated in Mexico by Ramón Mercader, a Soviet agent.[

Before he was murdered (on Stalin's orders) by Ramon Mercader, a Spanish agent of the Soviet secret police, Trotsky had a brief affair with his friend, Frida Kahlo. After their breakup, she made a self-portrait for him.

He caught an ice-pick
That made his ears burn...
Interestingly, although as most people here have said he was whacked upside his head with an ice-pick, my wife has been to the house in Mexico where he was killed, and on the official tour they take people into the street and show them a stain on the ground and say that it was the spot where he was shot!

He was forced into exile, globe trotted a little bit, and was found murdered in Mexico with an ice pick to the head; not a pleasant way to go.
