I'm just wondering if energy efficient bulbs are compatible with older style lamps? I have a standard desk lamp which uses 40 watt type B bulbs, and which cautions against using any other types due to the risk of fire.

You can get energy efficient light bulbs to fit just about every type of socket these days. The warning is there so you don't use more than 40 watts, but since EE bulbs only use around 9-13 watts, there's no worry about going over.

I use the energy efficient bulbs in about 90 percent of my house. But I do not recognize the type B you mention.

So sorry.

Go to your Neighborhood Hardware Superstore (Home Depot or Lowe's) and ask for type B energy efficient bulbs, they should have them.
