It is a mixture of chemicals sometimes. Pure bleach is called hypochlorite (NaOCl).

What you buy at the store has probably been watered down a good bit. Its powerful stuff.

Commercial bleach is often a dilute solution of sodium hypochlorite in water. Sodium hypochlorite alone might be considered a pure substance but in water it would likely be considered a homogenous mixture in water.
