it is definitely a classic.
it is short but i don't think its a bad thing because every track is hot, and they fit nicely one right after another. it is like a concept album of the 70s like the wall or something, the songs fit perfectly, there is no wasted space.

Classic, every song on there is a classic and I know it's short but there are no filler songs to drag the cd out. Nas kinda doomed himself by making such a good debut album because he's never been able to live up to the genius of Illmatic. Several of his albums are better than Illmatic???? Get the hell out of here

This is still his best album. Great instrumentals, tight lyrics that had real meaning, top notch production from DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor. When you can get songs like Memory Lane and It Ain't Hard to Tell, two of the greatest hip hop tracks ever, on the same album I think you have to give it classic status. Add in The World is Yours, One Love and NY State of Mind and its just gravy.

CLASSIC. sure it was short but the fact that it was that short and every song was soo good that gives the album a classic status. better nas albums than this one? not really.

classic, and you named one of the reasons why without knowing..Nas put together a classic album, displaying his lyrical abilities in just 10 songs, this was a landmark album in his career as well as east coast rap in general, clearly established himself as one of the most profound lyricists with this album....Some of his albums have sold more, but I think this is his best work.I think people unfairly compare all his albums to Illmatic..Nas is never going to make another illmatic, it was just that good..just like jay will never make another reasonable doubt, 50 will never make another get rich or die tryin...thats just the way it is.
